About
The Magill is a joint initiative between the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH) and the University of South Carolina School Behavioral Health (USC SBH) Team to build a well-qualified work force to support expansion of school mental health services in South Carolina. Graduate students in counseling, social work, psychology, and related fields complete a 600-hour school-based internship through SCDMH. They also complete 30 hours of professional development in school mental health through the USC SBH team.
John H. Magill School Mental Health Certificate Program Summary:
Complete 600 total internship hours at DMH through the School Mental Health Services Program. Interns will become familiar with DMH policies and procedures, be trained to use the agency’s electronic medical record, and learn how school mental health professionals become part of schools’ cultures.
Obtain at least 150 hours of clinical experience in schools, to include the observation and progressive delivery of individual, family, and group therapy. Interns will also be trained in clinical assessments and crisis intervention services. While primarily working in school settings, interns will participate in the interdisciplinary teams of DMH’s Community Mental Health Centers.
Complete 30 hours of professional development regarding school mental health over the course of the program.
